Road safety tax
Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicles Taxation Act 1974 section 3-B, inserted by the Third Amendment Act 2009 in force from 01-08-2009: an additional tax called road safety tax, collected at registration, at the Sixth Schedule rates, which read Rs 1,500 for a light motor vehicle. The Sixth Schedule's text has NOT been read here, so this is reported rather than primary. The Amendment Act 2023 (Act 30 of 2023) is reported to substitute Rs 2,250, but it commences on a date the State Government must notify and no such notification has been found, while current Tamil Nadu on-road breakdowns still print Rs 1,500 beside the post-2023 life tax bands. The lower figure is used because it cannot over-charge on either reading

The Rs 15 lakh owner-driver cover is mandatory; this prescribed rate is what most insurers charge for the annual form.

Tag cost only. Issuers add a deposit and minimum balance; dealer bundles commonly total Rs 500-600.
Comprehensive own-damage cover
Not in this total. Lenders require it and most buyers take it, but it has been market-priced since 2007 and varies widely with insurer, cover value and no-claim bonus, so an honest single figure does not exist. Budget for it from real quotes on top of this total.
  • The Rs 1,500 road safety tax, charged once when a new car is registered, is included in every figure here. Tamil Nadu waives road tax on an electric car bought before 2028, and nothing published says whether that waiver covers this charge too, so an electric buyer may pay Rs 1,500 less than we show.
  • A 2023 amendment is reported to have raised that road safety tax to Rs 2,250, but we cannot find the notification bringing it into force and current price breakdowns for the state still show Rs 1,500. If the higher figure is being collected, your total will be Rs 750 more than this.

Confirm the final figure with your dealer before paying.

Where these figures come from
One figure here is weaker than the rest: the road safety tax is what Tamil Nadu is reported to charge, not something we could read in a notification. Treat that line as indicative and confirm it with your dealer. Everything else is computed from Tamil Nadu's own documents, last checked . Rates change with state budgets, so confirm the final figure with your dealer before paying.
