Car road tax by state in India: the questions people ask
- Which state charges the least road tax on petrol cars?
- Of the 25 states on our site with petrol rates on file, Arunachal Pradesh starts lowest, at 2.5% of the ex-showroom price. Kerala goes highest, at 22%. Each state's page says whether its rate was read from the state's own documents or is what it is reported to charge.
- Why does the same car cost more on the road in one state than another?
- Road tax is set by each state as a share of the ex-showroom price, and the share differs state to state, so the same car can be lakhs apart on the road. Registration, the 3-year third-party insurance and TCS are the same everywhere; the state's tax is the part that moves.
- Do electric cars pay road tax?
- In 12 of the 25 states on file an electric car pays no road tax; 7 tax it, on an electric-car table or at the petrol rate; 6 could not be verified, so no electric car is priced there. Each state's page says which, with the notification it rests on.
