What Meghalaya charges, by fuel
Road tax is the one-time tax a state charges when a new car is registered, worked out as a share of the ex-showroom price. It is most of the gap between the price you see and the price you pay.

Worth knowing before you sign
- The costliest line to cross is ₹20 lakh ex-showroom: petrol cars just above it pay ₹40,000 more road tax than cars just below, because the 10% rate applies to the whole price, not only the part above the line.
- Electric cars pay no road tax here: at ₹20.65 lakh ex-showroom, that is ₹2,06,500 that petrol buyers pay and electric buyers do not.
- On the Mahindra XEV 9S Pack One Above Electric 59 kWh AT, Meghalaya is the cheapest of the 19 states we price it in, level with 11 other states: ₹2,89,100 under Assam.

- Derived 2026-08-09 from CarDekho's Shillong breakdowns across every electric model in the catalogue: 90 observations from Rs 4.99L to Rs 1.30Cr, every one carrying an identical flat charge, so the levy is not ad valorem. CarWale's Shillong figures agree on the shape, fitting a 0.39% slope on a Rs 4,163 intercept over nine cars, but disagree on the amount, so no charge is added. Controlled against five states whose electric rules are already on file, which returned their own distinct values rather than this one. NOT read from any Meghalaya instrument
