Road tax is the one-time tax a state charges when a new car is registered, worked out as a share of the ex-showroom price. It is most of the gap between the price you see and the price you pay.

Worth knowing before you sign
- The costliest line to cross is ₹50 lakh ex-showroom: petrol cars just above it pay ₹87,500 more road tax than cars just below, because the 16.5% rate applies to the whole price, not only the part above the line.
- An electric car at ₹20.65 lakh pays 4.5% here against 14.75% for petrol: ₹2,11,663 less road tax.
